After being in release for thirteen weeks, The Greatest Showman past $170M domestically this weekend and $400M worldwide tomorrow. This is quite an amazing feat considering the Hugh Jackman film opened to just $8.8M on its opening weekend. The magic of Christmas I guess. What’s even more amazing is to consider that it only has 55% on Rotten Tomatoes yet is a fan favourite.
Intended to be the next La La Land, however the film didn’t turn out to be anything like that. With a huge $84M budget, things looked bleak for the film after opening to a seven-digit number.
With a multiplier of nearly 20x this film is revolutionary – it shows that it doesn’t need to be liked by critics to make money.
Sure we already knew that (eg. DC universe) however on this scale, it’s huge. When it opened Fox were hoping to only loose $20-30M, but I highly doubt the execs seeing the film going on to pass $400M worldwide.
