Monthly Oscar Roundup: “Wonder Wheel”, “All The Money In The World” & “The Shape Of Water” Advance

Now In September, we’re warming up with some contenders already in release and some about the be released. we’ve also just had the venice international film festival which has shaped the race slightly. some of the films that have moved up is woody allen’s wonder wheel starring kate winslet. the film is about a carousel operator and his wife receive a visit from their estranged daughter in 1950s Coney Island, N.Y. the film also stars justin timberlake and juno temple and could be a real contender for some of the final spots in the best picture category. winslet also moved up in the best actress category to potentially being nominated.
another film that has gained some momentum is ridley scott’s ‘all the money in the world’ about paul getty, once the richest man in the world. based on true events his son-in-law was kidnapped and held at ransom for $17m dollars. the film stars kevin spacey as paul getty, michelle williams as the mother of the kidnapped and mark whalberg. the film is one that looks brilliant but whether it can get nominated for oscars is another question, since it’s being released on january 6, 2018. still though, since the trailer has been released the film has gained quite a big of ground.
however arguably the film that has moved up the most is guillermo del toro’s new film starring sally hawkins, octavia spencer and michael shannon, the shape of water. the film is a romanic-fantasy-thriller and was shown in venice. the early reviews have been spetactular, some saying it’s del toro’s best film. it is though questioned by pundits like me if it’s too light weight for academy voters or even too weird. that’s why sometimes it’s almost impossible to predict these sorts of films which come around every couple of years.
in other news battle of the sexes and victoria and abdul will be released into the world with logan officially the first film to be sent to academy voters. downsizing is losing it’s momentum despite it’s first trailer, seeming too light weight for the academy. dunkirk, darkest hour and the post are still the frontrunners with mudbound, wind river, logan and the greatest showman wildcards. logan become the first film sent to academy award members with them aiming for picture, director (mangold) and actor (jackman). jackman has two films that are in contention, logan and the greatest showman, both distributed by fox. does this mean they think he has a better chance with logan and won’t campaign the greatest showman for best actor?
