High Stakes Weekend Ahead Pitting Three Major Films Against Each Other

As ‘it’ wrecks the north american and international box office, two new major releases come into the equation. fox’s epic kingsman: the golden circle has building momentum for months and will explode this weekend worldwide. however it will be up against the lego ninjago film and the holdover ‘it’. this weekend promises to be interesting and should be even more interesting with blade runner 2049 entering the frame next weekend which should top $40m.
first we have the winner for the past two weeks, stephen king’s new adaption and definitely the most successful ‘it’. the film has already grossed $371m worldwide and an impressive $218.5m in north america in just two days. the film opened to $123.1m two weeks ago and last weekend it took another $60.1m, dropping just 51.4%. this weekend we could be looking at a 44-52% drop. this would put it around $32m for a third weekend taking it’s cume up to $265m domestically. this will probably be enough to take third place as the two new wide releases battle for SUPREMACY in north america.
one of them will be the highly anticipated sequel to kingsman: the secret service is the golden circle. the film is being debuted in 4003 theatres across north america. this is a significant amount more than the original, in fact 700 theatres, which should aid it’s chances to beat ninjago, which is debuting in just a few more, around 4070.
it should have enough steam to beat ninjago, with the film slightly behind the original, which you would expect but a safe bet would be $42-47m however i wouldn’t be surprised if it could push to $50m. i think a good bet would be $47m.
behind it should be the new lego film ninjago, which doesn’t look to be as successful as it’s predecessors. the film is currently tracking at $30-35m, and i don’t expect it to top $40m.
in fourth place should be american assassin which looks to drop around 49% putting it at $7-7.5m, pushing it’s domestic cume towards $30m. rounding out the top five is the last new wide release, friend request, which is tracking poorly and shouldn’t even top $4m.

1 kingsman: the golden circle – $47.3m
