the hitman’s bodyguard took the weekend yet again in the worst reported weekend since the september 11 attacks in 2001. Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan reynolds action-comedy dropped $10.1M dropping 53% in it’s second weekend to take it’s domestic cume to $40M in ten days. expect it to possible drop into single digit numbers when the weekend actuals come out on tuesday.
iN second place is warner bros. annabelle: creation taking in another $7.4M to take it’s domestic total to $77M. currently it looks like it will push to $90M domestically pacing slightly ahead than it’s predecessor. in the international market it took an estimated $22M from 61 markets to push it’s international cume to $137.2M, and worldwide $215M.
in third place is the weinstein’s company new animated release, leap! which took in a disappointing $5m for it’s three-day. internationally it stands at $63M and shouldn’t top $75M worldwide. in fourth is another weinstein film, wind river, which just keeps on giving. in it’s second wide expansion (2095 theatres) it took $4.4m to take it’s domestic cume close to $10m.
rounding out the top 5 is steven soderbergh’s new film logan lucky which fared well dropping 42% to take $4.4m and fifth place. it’s domestic cume stands at $15m and $16m worldwide. it continues it expansion internationally and could carry on to around $45m.
christopher nolan’s dunkirk took another $4m dropping 40% to take it’s north american total to $172.5m. it will probably just top $180m by the end of its run. currently it’s worldwide cume stands at $413m but it looks forward to openings in the middle kingdom, where his films usually do well. his last film, interstellar (2014), took $123m in china alone.
speaking of which, in china luc besson’s valerian topped the weekend taking $29M ahead of films such as cars 3 & baby driver. valerian did not fare well in the north american market only taking $40m and with a heavy price tag ($180M), it needed some help in china. thanks to china it now stands at $133m and if it’s lucky could get to around $175m. cars 3 took an estimated $11m in it’s opening in china to take it’s worldwide cume to $330M. edgar wright’s baby driver took $10.5M taking it’s worldwide cume just shy of $200M as it expands internationally and domestically (for labour day).
in other news wonder woman topped $400M worldwide thanks to a $3.4m opening in japan. it currently stands at $806M worldwide and should finish at $825M worldwide once it’s out of cinemas. despicable me 3 is closing on $1BN worldwide as it stands at $971M.
