This weekend War For The PlANEt Of The Apes will take the box office by storm in a busy weekend, with spider-man: homecoming close behind looking to drop well for a mcu film. in other news wonder woman and baby driver will continue their amazing runs and amazons the big sick is going into a wide release in over 2,500 theatres in the north american market.
in first place will be yet another film in the planet of the apes franchise, this time ‘war’. War For the planet of the apes will open to just a tad over 4,000 theatres in the north american market and should be able to take the no.1 spot with ease. ‘war’ is tracking at around the same pace and ‘dawn’ which opening to $72M. Looking at historical averages for films opening in a similar number of theaters, metrics such as MPAA rating, genre, release month and that impressive 82 rating on Metacritic suggest an opening anywhere from $59-87 million is in the offing. While we aren’t leaning so far as to expect an opening as high as $87 million, a debut that threatens or surpasses Dawn‘s $72.6 million doesn’t seem at all unlikely. i think it will open to $19M on friday and a $57M three day.
In second place will be the smash summer hit spider-man: homecoming starring tom holland as yet another incarnation of the web-slinger. Considering the fact it’s sharing the marketplace with War for the Planet of the Apes it’s tough to determine just how much it affects the two films, but we’re anticipating a drop no more than 50% or so for a second weekend. that puts it around $55.7m.
iN THIRD PLACE WILL BE UNIVERSAL’S DESPICABLE ME 3 WHICH SHOULD CONTINUE IT’S SOLID RUN BY DROPPING AROUND 44% IN IT’S THIRD WEEKEND WHERE THEN IT SHOULD TAKE IN AROUND $19m AS IT INCHES CLOSER TO $200m DOMESTICALLY. IN FOURTH PLACE WILL BE AMAZON’S THE BIG SICK WHICH IS WITHOUT A DOUBT A SURPRISE HIT. THIS WEEKEND IT GOES WIDE IN OVER 2500 THEATRES WHERE IT SHOULD CONTINUE IT’S GOLDEN RUN. IT SHOULD GET AROUND $11-12m IN IT’S BIG THREE-DAY.
rOUNDING OUT THE TOP 5 WILL BE MY FAVOURITE FILM OF june which is edgar wright’s baby driver, which has already taken $63M in the domestic market. if it holds out like it did last weekend where it only dropped 36% it should take another $8.2m which would put its cume above $70M in the north american market with still a lot of legs left in it.
Another new release is wish apon, a 12a horror film. for a $12M production budget, this film will profit but will come under the radar and should take around $7.2m. Finally, wonder woman should take another $6m to take it’s domestic total to $380M as it looks to overtake guardian’s of the galaxy vol.2 in the north american market.
