90th Academy Award Predictions – Part 2

wAbout two months ago I tried to predict who will be nominated for an Academy Award eleven months out, and since then a few things have changed. Not many films have come out which had a chance of being nominated but many new trailers and updates on the films have come to light and that changes many categories. We’re going to go through it again and expect monthly updates from now on.

BEST MOTION PICTURE

With ten places open, this is the hardest category to predict since most of the films which I think would be nominated have not been released yet. Yet there are frontrunners, even though some of them we don’t even know their names. For example, there’s an Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Project which could be nominated or an Untitled Steven Spielberg Film which also could be nominated. With still a long time to go I think I could narrow the category down to about twenty films that have a chance. My Dark Horse is LBJ starring Woody Harrelson potraying former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and how he was thrusted into power after the assassination of JFK.

potential nominees: (16)
untitled paul thomas anderson project
suburbicon
darkest hour
battle of the sexes
mudbound
untitled steven spielberg project
the greatest showman
Marshall
blade runner 2049
dunkirk
the current war
the snowman
the glass castle
detroit
downsizing
LBJ

BEST ACTOR

As you would expect for all of the categories, this is also another tight one, with only five spaces. Always a competitive race for the men, this year looks to be no different with some heavyweights in the mix with very high profile projects on the horizon.  The most notable is Gary Oldman, finally going for his own trophy with Joe Wright’s “Darkest Hour” and Daniel Day-Lewis, looking to join the company of Katherine Hepburn, with the untitled project from Paul Thomas Anderson.  Hugh Jackman has much promise playing P.T. Barnum while Chadwick Boseman takes on Marshall Thurgood.  Other notable men playing historic figures include Benedict Cumberbatch, Liam Neeson, John Boyega, and Ali Fazal.  The list of intriguing projects on the horizon include those from Armie Hammer (already a Sundance favorite), Oscar Isaac, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Fassbender, and double doses of Matt Damon, Idris Elba, and Colin Farrell. Woody Harrelson has two massive chances in both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor this year. Is it possible two win both a Supporting Actor Oscar and a Best Actor Oscar?
