after opening to $146M domestically gotg 2 will be at the number one spot for at least another week. King arthur: the legend of the sword and snatched will be battling for second place with furious 8 trying to close the gap to logan DOMESTICALLY. with an average drop of 58.4% for a marvel sequel that would be around the $61M for gotg 2, but i think it will fare only slightly better. personally I think it will drop from 55%-57%, that would put guardians at around $66M mark. boxofficemojo are predicting a more optimistic second weekend at $69.9M but they massively overestimated on it’s opening weekend. in other news about guardian’s, it crossed the $500M mark worldwide in it’s quest to reach $1BN.
in second place will be guy richie’s tale of king arthur: the legend of the sword starring jude law and charlie hunnam. set to debut in 3,7oo theatres, the industry expectations are around $23-25M and i think that’s about right, more at the top end around $25M.
In third place will be snatched starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn, which is positioned as the Mother’s Day weekend film, debuting in just over 3,500 theaters. Industry projections have the film opening in the “mid-teens”, which appears to be rather conservative given the holiday weekend and the fact Schumer’s Trainwreck outperformed expectations upon release and delivered a $30 million debut. That’s not to say Snatched is likely to match that figure (though we wouldn’t be terribly surprised), but our basement figure is $18 million while an opening closer to $25 million doesn’t seem the least bit unreasonable, which is to say it could serve as strong competition for King Arthur and possibly take second once the dust settles.
