89th Academy Awards Predictions

As the Golden Globes and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards are finished, everybody turns to the last two big one’s, the BAFTA Awards and the Academy Awards. This year is an interesting one, with La La Land tying the record amount of nominations at the Academy Awards, but can it hold on to the big one’s with Moonlight, Arrival and Manchester By The Sea at their heals. This page will update with new predictions if there are changes.

Best Picture

La La Land

Manchester By The Sea

Hacksaw Ridge

Hell or High Water

Hidden Figures

Now maybe a month ago when it was the Golden Globes we all thought that La La Land will definitely win the Best Picture category at the Oscars, but since then Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea have closed the gap. Those three films have the best chances of winning this category, however Arrival could cause a massive surprise with 8 Academy Award Nominations, the second most behind Arrival.

Winner: La La Land

Outsiders: Manchester By The Sea, Moonlight & Arrival

Best Director

Denis Villeneuve – Arrival

Barry Jenkins – Moonlight

Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester By The Sea

Damien Chazelle – La La Land

Mel Gibson – Hacksaw Ridge

Despite the surprise nomination of Mel Gibson, this category is between two Directors. On one hand we have the favourite, Damien Chazelle directing La La Land and again, we have Moonlight director Barry Jenkins as the outsider. We can definitely rule out Kenneth Lonergan and Mel Gibon with Denis Villeneuve – directing Arrival – the real real outsider.

Winner: Damien Chazelle (La La Land)

Outsiders: Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) & Denis Villeneuve (Arrival)

Best Actress

Natalie Portman (Jackie)

Isabelle Huppert (Elle)

Emma Stone (La La Land)

Ruth Negga (Loving)

Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)

To start of with we can safely say no matter how much the Academy loves Meryl Streep she will not win this year. The are two actresses that stand out to me: Emma Stone and Natalie Portman. I can safely say that one of theses two actresses will win the Oscar.

Winner: Emma Stone (La La Land)

Outsider: Natalie Portman (Jackie)

Best Actor

Denzel Washington (Fences)

Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea)

Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)

Andrew Garifeld (Hacksaw Ridge)

Ryan Gosling (La La Land)

This is the tightest category in this year’s Academy Awards without a doubt. At the start of January we certainly thought that either Casey Affleck or Ryan Gosling would win this Oscar but three days ago Denzel Washington won the Best Actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Whilst I can see Denzel winning there’s something at the back of my head that says he will not, and it looks like Casey Affleck is the frontrunner, but can Ryan Gosling pull back and win it for La La Land? We will see after the BAFTA Awards, and you may see this predictions changing a lot.

Winner: Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea)

Outsiders: Ryan Gosling (La La Land)

Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

Jeff Bridges (Hell Or High Water)

Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)

Dev Patel (Lion)

Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea)

No La La Land in this category! I’d say that there are three actors who could win this, but there is a frontrunner: Mahershala Ali. His performance in Moonlight may of not won a Golden Globe (Aaron Taylor Johnson not nominated for his performance in Nocturnal Animals) but he’s certainly at the front. All I’ll say is do not rule out Michael Shannon.

Winner: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

Outsiders: Michael Shannon (Noctural Animals) & Dev Patel (Lion)

Best Supporting Actress

Michelle Williams (Manchester By The Sea)

Viola Davis (Fences)

Nicole Kidman (Lion)

Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures)

Naomie Harris (Moonlight)

This one is easy, although I would like to see Naoime Harris win because she’s a Brit.

Winner: Viola Davis (Fences)

Outsiders: Naomie Harris (Moonlight) & Michelle Williams (Manchester By The Sea)

Best Original Screenplay

La La Land – Damien Chazelle

Manchester By The Sea – Kenneth Lonergan

20th Century Women – Mike Mills

Hell or High Water – Taylor Sheridan

The Lobster – Yorgos Lanthimos

This one is quite hard, could  Manchester By The Sea could take this one from La La Land.

Winner: Damien Chazelle (La La Land)

Outsiders: Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester By The Sea)

Best Adapted Screenplay

Lion – Luke Davies

Arrival – Eric Heisserer

Fences – August Wilson

Moonlight – Barry Jenkins

Hidden Figures – Allison Schroeder

I could see August Wilson winning this one, he would be the first posthumous winner since Gone with the wind. However the clear winner would be Moonlight.

Winner: Barry Jenkins (Moonlight)

Outsiders: Eric Heisserer (Arrival) & August Wilson (Fences)

Best Original Song

City of Stars – La La Land

Audition (The Fools Who Dream) – La La Land

Can’t Stop The Feeling – Trolls

How Far I’ll Go – Moana

The Empty Chair – Jim: The James Foley Story

This one is dead easy, it just has to be La La Land, but which one? I’m just kidding, we all know which one.

Winner: City of Stars (La La Land)

Outsiders: N/A

Best Original Score:

Justin Hurwitz (La La Land)

Thomas Newman (Passengers)

Jackie (Mica Levi)

Moonlight (Nicolas Britell)

Lion (Dustin O’Halloran)

Could it be anyone but La La Land? No, we don’t think so either!

Winner: Justin Hurwitz (La La Land)

Outsider: N/A
