Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) is the latest actor to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing former surgeon Steven Strange. The film also stars Rachael McAdams (Spotlight), playing Christian Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) plays Mordo, Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) plays Kaecilius and Tilda Swinton playing The Ancient One.

The film follows Steven Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), one of the best neurosurgeon’s in the world, who loses the use of his hands after a car accident. His co-worker and former lover Christine Palmer(Rachael McAdams) tries to help him to move on, but Strange, believing he can regain use of his hands, instead uses all his resources pursuing experimental surgeries in vain. After searching for cures, he goes to Nepal to look for The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton).  Strange trains in Nepal for months until he is as powerful as The Ancient One and Kaecilius.

Marvel Studios have now released 14 films and Doctor Strange is by far the best one of them. Whilst you have the usual Marvel action and explosions, but the twisting and mind-boggling visual effects and with the performance from Cumberbatch combined creates this new world in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that makes you want to watch the film again and again. Cumberbatch’s performance is unpredictable and exciting and is in my opinion the first funny Marvel character.

As for the mid-credit scene, where Strange is talking to Thor about Loki, this is a big scene for the MCU. Thor says he and Loki are looking for their father. This means Thor and Loki are working together! Strange says he will help them if they go straight back to Asgard. Thor agrees. This surely means that Benedict Cumberbatch will star in Thor: Ragnarok. A month ago it was confirmed that Cumberbatch will star in the next Avengers film in 2018. If it’s true that Cumberbatch will star in the next Thor film he would have filmed three big-budget Marvel films and a series of Sherlock in just over two years!

To sum Doctor Strange up, A bizarre and beautiful detour on the Marvel journey, which culminates in a mind-bending, expectation-inverting final act. For this reason I am giving this film my first 5.0/5.0 rating. This film isn’t just for the usual Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, it can be watched by an person, a 12 year old child or a 55 year old woman and I can guarantee that 95% of the people who see Doctor Strange will enjoy it. In my opinion this is the best film of the year and quite possibly the best Sci-Fi film since Independence Day.

2015: Filming in New York

Rating: 5.0/5.0
