Early Success (2002-2008)

In 2002, Renner played Jeffry Dahmer in Dahmer. His performance was well received, with him being nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. He went on to appear in S.W.A.T. in 2003 and The Heart is Deceitful of all things in 2004.

In 2005, Renner starred in A Little Trip To Heaven with Julia Stiles. He next starred in the independent film Neo-Ned, a psychotic thiller. The film won all of the awards it was nominated for at festivals, including for Renner the Palm Beach International Film Award for Best Actor. In 2006 he starred in Love comes to the Executioner with Ginger Goodwin.

He had supporting roles in the success The Assasination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford, where he played Jessie James (Brad Pitt) cousin.

Breakthrough 2008-2015

At the end of 2007 he appeared as Sergeant Doyle in the Danny Boyle sequel 28 Weeks Later. on to achieve critical success for his portrayal of bomb disposal expert, Sergeant William James in the 2009 Iraq war thriller The Hurt LockerThis earned him several awards and nominations including a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards in 2009.

In 2010, His peformance in Ben Affleck’s The Town alongside Jon Hamm earned him another Academy Award nomination, thing time for Best Supporting Actor. In 2011, He had an uncredited cameo in Thor, staring his career in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the end of 2011, Jeremy Renner joined the cast of Mission Imposible in the fourth film Ghost Protocol.

He started 2012 off with another appearance in the MCU, this time in The Avengers, the fifth highest grossing film of all time, not bad. In the same year, Renner starred in the fourth film of the Bourne Franchise, The Bourne Legacy. In this film Matt Damon, who starred as Jason Bourne in the previous films, because he was busy  with other projects. Renner and Damon have both said that they would love to do a film together, after the fifth film coming out in the summer.

Renner starred in the action horror film, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters in 2013. Renner also featured in the David O Russell film American Hustle based on the FBI ABSCAM operation of the late 1970’s. In the cast also were Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, quite a cast! In October 2014, he starred in Kill The Messenger as Gary Webb based on the book Dark Alliance.

In 2015, Renner reprised his role as Hawkeye in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the sequel to The Avengers. He returned to the Mission: Impossible franchise inMission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, released in July 2015. In 2016, Renner will star in the sci-fi film Story of Your Life, opposite his American Hustle co-star Amy Adams, and will play Hawkeye again in Captain America: Civil War.
